Two Positions-ChicagoGALTER HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY Northwestern University, Chicago ASSISTANT DIRECTOR POSITION DESCRIPTION: Senior level full-time management position for a health sciences library with a staff of 30 FTE (fifteen professionals and fifteen support staff), an acquisitions budget in excess of $692,000, a collection of 291,000 volumes, and 2,200 journal subscriptions. Key responsibilities include: 1) library operations oversight; 2) collection development; 3) personnel management including professional and support staff evaluation process; 4) administrative staff supervision; 5) Library Committee coordination; 6) facility management. As a member of the library management team, works with the director in determining and interpreting library policies, evaluating existing programs and developing new programs, setting goals and objectives, preparing the annual budget, determining salary increases, preparing annual and other administrative reports. POSITION REPORTS TO: Director REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Background Qualifications Master's degree in library/information science from an accredited college or university. 5-7 years experience, with increasing levels of responsibility and supervision of both support and professional staff. Experience working with faculty and/or user groups. Academy of Health Information Professionals membership preferred. Documented history of professional service, publication and/or research. Performance Qualifications Excellent communications and interpersonal skills. Strong management, leadership and organizational skills. Ability to work well under pressure. Evidence of initiative and flexibility. Ability to work effectively in a changing environment. Knowledge of academic medical center operations and their emerging trends. Ability to evaluate and assess library programs, services, and policies. Strong computer skills, including experience in productivity tools, integrated library systems, the Internet and web pages. The components of the new information system support the vision and mission of the institutions served by the Galter Library. The library's $10 million renovation project, completed in March 1996, resulted in a virtual library which is centered around the Library's Health Sciences Information System (http://www.galter.nwu.edu). The library's vision is for it to be anywhere the user wants it to be. The library houses a collection of print, non-print and electronic materials for use by faculty, staff, students and alumni of the university and its affiliated institutions and includes more than 290,000 volumes, 2,200 serial subscriptions, and over 3,300 non-print titles and computer programs.
