First,
Thanks for the many replies I received to this inquiry. While there are
many diverse opinions, I'll try to tease out the areas of consensus.
- Your collection development policy's gift policy should clearly define
how you handle gift subscriptions, and they should be treated as any
other gift (that is, make no promises to hold it forever, etc)
- Gifts should not be lended, or included in SERHOLD, Docline or other
consortial list. (even here there is some disagreement, with some
asserting that gifts are the library's and should be used how we see
fit, and others asserting that it would violate copyright to provide
materials that we don't in fact own)
- The subscription must be in the donor's name, not the library's.
Instead of obtaining the physical copy via a gift, another option would
be:
- providing Medical Staff with an opportunity to donate, whether
individually or as a group, to sponsor institutional subscriptions. The
library could then list the subscription in the catalog, and perhaps
include a donation plate with the journal.
Thanks,
Michael

Subject: gift subscriptions
My library has been planning serious cuts of journals, and when we sent
out our list, we had a few doctors offer to provide us with their
personal subscriptions. I've been told that we can't add them to our
catalog, bind them, etc.
Is this true?
Thanks,
Michael
