Sorry for the slow reply, I was on holiday.

One possible cause that no one has mentioned yet is cellphones.  I know that
if I have my mobile in certain positions on the desk, it will interfere with
the mouse whenever it contacts the phone network, and cause the same
symptoms
that you're seeing.

It took me ages to work out what was causing it, and now I just don't keep
my phone on the desk :-)

Problem solved then... just use a different mouse! :-)
