Tom,

The lab "peninsula" would only be one pice of the "common path of travel"
distance to where two distinct paths to exits diverge.  Depending on your
occupancy and whether you are sprinklered, the allowable distance can vary,
generally in the 50 to 150 ft. range in NFPA 101.
