Could it be a labeling on the box on a separable tag that gets thrown away?" New safety shoes are labeled as compliant with ASTM F2413-05, ANSI gave up the standard about 2 years ago and is no longer referenced. If your PPE footwear policies reference ANSI they are now out of date and should be revised to reference ASTM as well. Look on the inside of the tongue of the shoe for the label, it may also have been worn off through use. I also new an old safety guy who carried a magnet in his pocket and he would walk around testing toes. Doesn't work so well with the new composites, but if you really can't trust your work force it sounds like a much more humane test.
