Of course the powers that be have a few question and I thought this would be the best place to get them answered. 1. Do other universities provide wireless network services to residence halls? Yes. We've found that students pretty much expect wireless everywhere these days. 2. Are these services centrally managed or are students allowed to bring in their own access-points (perhaps with configuration guidelines provided)? Centrally managed. Don't let them bring their own equipment. Rogues always cause problems. 3. Have there been any issues with providing wireless services to residence halls? Students love it. Haven't lost a single AP to theft, vandalism, etc since we installed them (2 years and running). They won't destroy their internet access and the thin APs don't work without a controller, so theirs no real profit in stealing them. Sometime they "adjust" the antennas or decorate them, but that's about as bad as it gets. Biggest problem is fridges, microwaves, etc near the front of the rooms between the students laptops and the APs in the hallway causes the signal to get blocked. But we've only had 2-3 cases of that. You didn't ask this question, but I'll answer it... What vendor do you recommend? Meru, Meru, Meru! - Single channel architecture is a must in our dorms where the APs need to blast full power to penetrate the concrete walls from the hallways to the rooms, but they can see each other perfectly down the halls. If we let them auto adjust power on a 3 channel setup based on neighboring APs, they would probably turn themselves down since they can see each other and not cover the rooms. With Meru, we run 1 channel and all the APs at full power. It works great. Thanks in advance for your input!
