How do you temper the water? The tempering valves I have seen are
prohibitively expensive.
Do folks have reasonable solutions?

Great question! Tempered is my answer. I had this same discussion with
a group from Arizona who had out door self contained units! Just imagine
how hot the water could be in a plastic container in the 120 degree sun.
