Call For Performance Evaluation Tools The Professional Development Committee of the Hospital Libraries Section invites you to participate in an important project. The committee is interested in collecting criteria/standards statements that are part of your performance evaluation tools. These criteria will be displayed and shared at the 1994 annual meeting. The committee will also develop a generic list of performance criteria for use by the membership. As supervisors, we must periodically judge the performance of employees that report to us. Whether we like this responsibility or not, we must evaluate each employee, complete and sign the form and review the evaluation with the employees. As managers (including libraries staffed by a single person), we report to an individual who rates our ability to perform duties relative to the hospital's standard. In either case, the criteria based approach links performance to the job description, as required by the JCAHO. It is also an objective measurement of employee productivity. quality and customer service skills. We all can greatly benefit from well structured, defined performance expectations. And the evaluation process does serve as a basis for salary increases and promotions. But an employee evaluation can also help build a stronger working relationship between the supervisor and employee; clarify expectations and help us do our jobs more effectively. Typical major areas included in a performance evaluation: Quality of work Quantity of work Knowledge of job Initiative Attendance/Reliability Please submit your job descriptions and accompanying performance evaluation tools to Wendy Skinner at the address below by March 1, 1994.
