Hello colleagues!

Update: I found the FDA approval documents for the first drug on my patron's list: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/nda/99/21-085_Avelox.cfm

In the documents, it refers to 3 phase III clinical trials that were "pivotal," and there are detailed descriptions of the studies, but no citations. Is it possible they were never published? I tried using the descriptions of the studies to find a published version on PubMed, or Clinicaltrials.gov, with no luck. [...]

I think the ClinicalKey issue is going to become more fraught. Whilst currency is crucial in any synthesised tool the issues with ClinicalKey are wider. It contains so much more secondary literature in the form of Elsevier E-books it has the potential to be really useful especially to academic institutions. However the issue for most of us will be the cost. It is so far out of reach for most if not all libraries. I posted last week about ClinicalKey not updating many of its First Consult
monographs since 2007, and the Breast Cancer monograph since 2010. I
received a response from David R. Goldmann, MD,Vice-President, Chief
Medical Quality Assurance Officer. Among his comments were the following:

"Elsevier employs a structured editorial process for reviewing and updating
*First Consult* content. We update monographs based on ongoing editorial
reviews of current medical literature and revise when important new
information is published. Please note that we do not date-stamp our

I am hoping someone can help me with a question I received that after a searching for a bit, I am not finding what I fee she wants. I am trying to find a "tool" that is either taught to medical students and/or nurse practitioners on how to give verbal report/presentations on a patient. It would be similar to the SBAR that is taught to undergraduate students. Is anyone familiar with a tool that is out there that is used for this purpose. I used the following search strategy:

(hospital admission OR emergency department) AND substance abuse detection AND (urine OR urinalysis OR urine sampling methods)

138 citations were retrieved. As you might imagine, many of the articles were about psych issues. However, at least a couple of the articles were about screening for substance abuse in trauma patients, with one specifically in the context of avoiding surgical anesthesia problems. [...]

A patron would like information on whether hospitals are routinely performing preadmission/admission urine testing for ETOH or other substance abuse; there is apparently data showing that substantial number of patients do not admit to illicit drug use or alcohol abuse. I have found a few citations about routine urine drug testing, but when I add the term preadmit* or preadmiss*, the results drop to 0. I know, from my days as a medical technologist, that that people were drawn for routine testing for some venereal diseases, but the reasoning for that was public health. This is more concerned [...]
