the Huber Debates this coming year.

Our normal date is the first weekend in November. Some asked if we could
move it.

The weekend before would be Harvard. The weekend after would be Oxford.
Both of these are important tournaments to those attending our

The tournament starts with students posting on the 17th, which means we
pair it on the 16th. If you can get people to create accounts by the 16th
and then e-mail me the addresses they used to create them we can add them
after the deadline. Once the 17th rolls around it'd be too late. Does that
work? [...]

Joe,

Can you delay the registration until the 17th? I am at USU Nationals and I
definitely think I can get a few debaters but won't see them until I get
back to campus.

Deadline for registration is 4/14. Tournament starts 4/17. First round of
judging 4/22 - 4/23. We desperately need some more judges to sign up and
we're always looking for more competitors. Free registration, $100 gift
card 1st place prize plus many others, and great publicity.

I'm not sure where I stand on this (and I suspect I'm in the regional minority), but I think it's something we should consider as a community. A primary benefit would hopefully be that it would increase diversity in judging. I've heard two major arguments against it:
1. It would hurt people's feelings.
I think this is a pretty weak argument, as:
a) hurt feelings are outweighed by increased diversity in judging.
b) not unique: we have no problem with hurting the feelings of 18 year-old students by posting their debate "grades" on Tabroom.com. If I give someone a 20, [...]

I remember Samantha as a young student at WDI. She was bright,
articulate and anxious to learn.

And so she did. What an amazing run! We need a billion more like her!

A huge congratulations to her and the WVU debate program. You can tell
the quality of a tree by its fruits.

Samantha is such a fixture in the region. Tournaments definitely won't
be the same without her. My teams will surely miss having her in the
back of the room. Sam, don't be a stranger and come back to visit (and
judge!) often!

Tonight, when she judged the final round of CEDA Nationals, Samantha Godbey completed an amazing 9 years with WVU Debate (4 years as a debater, and 5 years as a coach). Recruited to the Debate Team as a Novice when she saw former debater Jeremy Wilson wearing a team t-shirt at a summer camp, Samantha went 0-6 in her first tournament at Buffalo (in fairness, her evil coach had her in JV that weekend). This may be presumptuous of me, but to the extent there will be a Bowdoin
Debate Team next year, we would vote for November 9-10, a 2 day tournament
and 6 CEDA/NDT rounds.

I think the consensus at the CEDA meeting (i was judging at the time) was the 9-10 weekend because the first weekend would stack so many tournaments in a row for people. I suspect others will chime in on this. Also, I assume by "5 CEDA Prelims" you mean for novice, since 6 would be necessary in open for the rounds to count toward the NDT? [...]

Again, the biggest problem with a summer session is the lack of live data. It could be somewhat helpful (and I'm willing to do something at CEDA meeting if I'm there--and others who are more CAT-proficient would be there as well; would also be willing to do it when I visit family in NYC)), but actual experience during a tournament is essential, I think. As for trading you for Willie, maybe you should have your squad vote (I'd put a smiley face here, but that always gets messed up due to my lack of computer-savviness).--Neil

Isn't the CEDA/Topic meeting in DC this summer? Would anyone be
interested in doing a session there?

Otherwise, CUNY probably has space if anyone wanted to do a summer
workshop in the city. We could work on housing options if needed, or
simply an itinerary of family friendly activities for all ages if you
were just trying to think of some place to go for a long weekend with
the non-debate people in your life (assuming you have non-debate
people in your life ....). We'll put out that we are doing our summer
events in August and early September again [...]
