Hi gang,
My mother, aged 70, who lives in a condo and is not a particularly active
woman, is looking for a nice little rescue dog and having a devil of a time
finding one. She actually has had a 5-yr-old, 10 lb terrier mix home on
trial for a week now who in very many ways has lots of ideal qualities for
this situation, but has already several times exhibited completely
unpredictable behaviors of aggression toward both mom's cat and the cairn
next door (who is herself a very reserved rescue dog)-and once toward mom
herself, when there was cat food at stake! This dog belonged first to an
older man who apparently didn't train her at all and then went into a
convalescent home, then she was adopted by a woman with several other
rescues/fosters and, due to some difficult pet dynamics, kept this girl
crated and leashed most of the time with lots of yelling involved (her own
description of the situation). We don't know enough about terriers to know
whether this behavior, which we gather is typical of dogs such as Jack
Russells who haven't been thoroughly trained at a young age, is at this
point correctable. She seems fine with our ES because she basically ignores
him, but this sort of bipolar moodiness is worrisome. Mom is not averse to a
medium-sized dog, and is home all day and happy to walk the dog (she would
really like a dog with a temperament like our ES, who is incredibly mellow,
and might actually be perfect for an older, smaller ES), but she's on a very
limited income and probably can't afford a dog of any considerable size if
only because of the potential medical expenses should there be any. Does
anyone know if there is a dog out there smaller than the average ES who's
calm enough for this lifestyle, and does anyone have any insight into
whether this type of behavior in a mature terrier who's been through two
owners and is virtually untrained is cause for real concern or correctable?
Thanks.
Pam

I claim approaching senility, both for me and my computer (why else would
my messages be going to South Dakota?). Thanks, Karen; I think I'll just
sit back and keep reading until I figure it out. LOL I hope your dog finds
a good home and the other person finds a good dog!

rini,
you didn't misunderstand, but you've now confused my reply with the original
message. The original message was looking for a dog. I posted that I have
an available 19 month old. :)
