BURLINGTON, Vermont -- Jeff Turner scored twice as the UMass Minutemen
posted a 6-2 win over Vermont in non-league Division I men's ice hockey
action Tuesday.
Vermont, 4-7-2, took a 1-0 lead at 5:57 of the first period when Oriel
McHugh scored with a quick wrist shot from between the circles. Bryson
Busniuk and Tim Plant assisted on the goal, McHugh's second of the season.
UMass, 6-5-0, responded less than two minutes later when Jeff Turner took a
pass from Minutemen goalie Gabe Winer and beat Vermont's Matt Hanson at
7:39.
The Minutemen, who outshot Vermont, 16-2 in the second period, took a 2-1
lead at 15:37 of the second period when Turner scored his second goal of
the game on a rebound. Thomas Pock and Mike Warner assisted on the goal,
Turner's sixth this season.
At 7:06 of the third period, Nick Kuiper scored from the blue line to give
UMass a 3-1 lead. Matt Anderson and Stephen Werner assisted on the goal,
which came after a faceoff in the Vermont zone.
UMass added to its lead at 10:30 of the third on freshman Matt Fetzer's
first career goal. Jeff Lang and Werner then sandwiched goals between the
third goal of the season from Vermont's John Longo to make for the final
margin.
"They are nasty to play against," Vermont coach Mike Gilligan said. "They
do all the little things well that we need to do. The puck wasn't bouncing
for us and we weren't working hard enough to get the bounces. It's time to
go back to the drawing board."
Winer had nine saves for UMass, while Hanson stopped 20 for Vermont.
GAME NOTES: The Catamounts host Army Saturday at 7:00pm at Gutterson
Vermont then welcomes the US National Under-18 team, which features
top-rated prospect Ryan Suter, who is projected to be a first-round draft
pick in the upcoming NHL draft, on Friday, Dec. 6th at 7:00pm   Attendance
for the game was 3,457, on the same night the men's basketball team drew
more than 1,500 for their game against Dartmouth. The Catamounts, behind
Taylor Coppenrath's 24 points, beat the Big Green, 62-41 at Patrick Gym
Hanson made a sterling stop on Mike Warner at the end of a UMass penalty
with 5:25 left in the second period. Warner broke in alone from center ice
and made a move on Hanson, who read it all the way and made the glove save
 One of the assistant coaches for UMass is Bill Gilligan, the younger
brother of UVM head coach Mike Gilligan   The game against UMass was
Vermont's fifth against a Hockey East opponent   Hockey East Media
