Many/most shelters don't do this anymore, due to public outcry. Possibly some
pounds do.
I have seen hundreds of dog studies over the years, and most of them were
done on random-source dogs, not specially-bred ones.
From what I've heard about the AM article (I'll get it today), it's right on
target. You can make a lot of money selling dogs to research labs, and it's
so easy and low-risk to steal dogs, since most people don't think this
happens and therefore don't take precautions to protect their dogs. This
story, sadly, is not an urban legend.
