Yeah, I know you know. We did also.
Last night a friend brought our co-op order. He also brought me a present of
3# of very dark chocolate. I finished unloading the trunk but left the
chocolate there so he could surprise me. Never thinking.
Two hours later we went out to close birds and found a large piece of foil on
the ground. In the trunk was one of the two 1 1/2# pieces. I called the vet
and was told to watch the dogs for being hyper or diarrhea or vomiting. Bad
advice.
Uncomfortable with this Jasmine called and spoke to another vet a couple of
hours later. She said induce vomiting with a teaspoon of salt. That worked
for Bear and no evidence of chocolate. She asked us to bring the others in
right away. On the way Bo began to vomit and there was no question who ate
the chocolate. We decided to begin treatment on the three dogs just in case.
By the time we got to the vet Bo was totally disoriented and shaking.
During the night the other two also began to vomit and Celt is passing blood
in his urine. Bo had a very bad night. It looks like all three dogs will be
okay but it was close with Bo both because of the chocolate and because he is
already old and weak and out of it and we have thought of putting him down.
Probably if the other dogs had not gotten some of the chocolate we would have
lost Bo. We would probably have lost any one of the dogs if they got the
whole thing.
We learned that the kind of chocolate makes a lot of difference. Dark
chocolate is about twice as bad as milk chocolate and baking chocolate is
about twice as bad as that. One standard box of baking chocolate is 8 oz,
probably enough to do it. Various meds can do it also - aspirin, etc.
I did something dumb but something any of us could have done. Who would
think old Bo could even climb into the trunk? We came close to losing one or
more of our family. Please don't make the same mistake.
