BURLINGTON, Vermont -- Vermont's Billy Kelly scored twice and Bryson
Busniuk added a goal and three assists as the Catamounts defeated Army,
8-4, in a non-league Division I men's ice hockey game Saturday.
Vermont broke open a tight game with four goals from four different players
in the first 8:02 of the third period and never looked back.
Army, 5-8-0 overall, took a 1-0 lead when Vermont's Travis Russell
misplayed the puck in the crease and it trickled over the goal line at
4:27. Tim Quinlan was credited with the goal, his second of the season.
Chris MacLeod and Joe Dudek assisted on the goal.
Vermont, 5-7-2, tied it at 1-1 when senior captain John Longo scored while
the teams were skating four-on-four. Oriel McHugh and Scott Mifsud assisted
on the goal, Longo's fourth of the season and the 17th of his career.
Vermont then added two more before the end of the period, with Billy Kelly
scoring his first of the year at 14:36 and Bryson Busniuk notching his
second of the season at 19:12 on the power play. Freshman defenseman Phil
Youngclaus assisted on both goals, with Scott Mifsud also getting an assist
on Longo's goal. Busniuk made the pass to Kelly for his goal, which caromed
off an Army defender and bounced over Army goaltender Brad Roberts.
Army came back with a goal just 15 seconds into the second period when
Chris Casey scored from a tough angle. Chad Mayfield and Nic Serre assisted
on the goal, Casey's sixth of the season.
Vermont retook a two-goal lead at 5:08 when Brady Leisenring tipped a shot
from Oriel McHugh while Vermont was on a 5-on-3 power play. Mifsud picked
up his second assist of the night on the goal, Leisenring's fifth of the
season.
Army made it 4-3 at 10:56 when Brett Osness scored with assists going to
Mike McLean and Nick Cahill.
Vermont broke it open early in the third with three goals in the first six
minutes. Mifsud scored at 3:17, Kelly at 3:29 and Baron Becker at 5:18.
Longo and Busniuk assisted on Mifsud's goal, while Ben Driver and Hajek got
the helpers on Kelly's tally. Longo got another assist, his second of the
game, with a nice pass to Becker, who steamed down the center of the ice
and beat Roberts cleanly while Vermont was short-handed.
Ben Driver scored his first of the year at 8:02, with Busniuk getting his
third assist of the game, to give Vermont an 8-3 lead. Army's Matt Field
scored late to make for the final margin.
Roberts had 19 saves and Bill Moss made three stops for Army, while Russell
recorded 25 saves for Vermont to pick up his second career win.
GAME NOTES: Mifsud had a goal and two assists, as did Longo Senior
captain Thomas Hajek had two assists The Catamounts host the US National
Under-18 team, which features top-rated prospect Ryan Suter and a number of
other outstanding players, on Friday, Dec. 6th at 7:00pm. Suter is
projected to be a first-round draft pick in the upcoming NHL draft, and
some believe he is a possible overall first pick in 2003 Tonight's game
is the final game of November for Vermont. The Catamounts finished the
month 4-5-0 ... Russell made his fifth career start tonight for Vermont and
picked up his second win of the year ... Four of Vermont's first 14 games
have gone into overtime, with games against Hockey East foes Northeastern
and Boston University ending up tied, the Fairfield game (MAAC) going to OT
before ending in a 3-2 Catamount win on Joey Gasparini's goal, and last
Friday's ECAC contest with Princeton, won by sophomore Brady Leisenring's
goal ... Juniors Tom Child and Dustin Corbett saw their first action of the
season tonight for Coach Mike Gilligan. Child is the son of legendary UVM
defenseman Ted Child '74, a member of the UVM Athletic Hall of Fame ...
Senior goaltender Shawn Conschafter is now 10th all-time in career saves
with 1,281, and eight in career wins with 11 ... Vermont did not score a
short-handed goal all of last season. Through 14 games, the Cats already
have three, with two from Jeff Miles and Becker's SHG vs. Army ... The
Catamounts are 5-4-1 at home this season ... Vermont is 4-1-1 when it
outshoots its opponent ... According to the ECAC, 21 former players from
the league are on NHL rosters. Vermont has three players - perennial NHL
All-Star John LeClair, Aaron Miller of Los Angeles, and UVM's all-time
leading scorer Martin St. Louis with Tampa Bay. Sharp started the season in
the NHL before being sent down to the American Hockey League, and former
All-American goalie Tim Thomas was 2-0-0 with the Boston Bruins before
being sent to Providence last weekend ... St. Louis had a pair of goals in
Tampa's loss to Vancouver last night, giving him 13 for the season ...
Miller returned to the LA lineup two weeks ago and is logging a ton of
minutes for the Kings ... LeClair dislocated his left shoulder and tore his
labrum earlier this week and is out for 10-12 weeks ... Sharp also went on
the injured reserve list after he broke his leg in the Philadelphia
Phantom's 2-0 loss to Hershey last night. He is out 6-8 weeks Vermont has
had 10 regular-season home games this season, and three have been sell-outs
(Northeastern, New Hampshire and Cornell). The Catamounts are averaging
