so...
Been a bit since I updated on Brick and crew. I took Brick and Pow, and Nari and Blue (aka Gator, aka Bubba) to a Variable surface tracking seminar. I started Brick on tracking the day before, Nari and Blue hadnt done any yet, and Pow has been training off and on for a while in it. Everyone did great - took half a track and the first article find for Nari and Blue to get the idea, but then they took off, without a problem. Kestrel went to a fun sheltie/collie conformation match, where she helped a junior handler learn how to show, won the 12-18mo puppy class, and came home with a flexi lead as a prize.
I tracked Brick again today. OMG.
He's so much fun. His dad Pow tracks pretty quickly, but Brick was running along the track once he picked it up - until he hit a small creek. The water wasn't anymore than maybe a foot across and like 3 inches deep. He was frantic, he knew the trail ended at the water's edge, and was bouncing up and down the bank, and finally just went through and over to start tracking again. So, I"m going to get off my ass and try to have him and Kestrel ready for their TD certs in early Dec. Ha. There's a 7 slot test in VA in Jan, that's the one I'll try to get into.
Herding wise - all the Pow pups herd sheep. Jackson and Brick are the most intense. Pretty neat to watch. Brick and Nari are the most intense on ducks - but Brick is like OC about either sheep or ducks. And he does like cattle too. So add having all 4 pups ready for their HCT or HT/PT when they are 6mo or 9mo to the list of things that are top priority. Course, that doesn't include working with clients dogs....
Brick is showing good watchdog tendencies, and beginning to alert to the duck's vocalizations. He goes everywhere with me happily, and so far has been very adaptable.
