I don't know much about hawks or other raptors [I think that is what they
are called?], except that they seem to glide and rarely flap their wins,
right?  If this is the case, then my oversize sheltie, Jebbie, alerts to
them.  He will watch them and follow them and nearly run into trees etc in
his diligence.  He also alerts to squirrels, although for the life of me I
can't figure out what threat they would pose to his "flock".  Last evening
after dark, at last potty, I had to call him back and tell him that all the
squirrels were in bed, asleep - he was running back and forth between two
trees with known squirrel nests, just hoping one of them would "come out and
play".

I think some dogs must just have this sense stronger than others.  Our pup
Sawyer alerted to a hawk yesterday.  Didn't bark but it had his attention
and he followed it and climbed up to the top of a dirt pile to keep an eye
on it until it flew out of sight.  Our other dogs don't seem to have as much
of an awareness of the BOP.  Holly doesn't like sparrows and will snatch
them out of the air if she can.
