Yup Our collie is just that. He has an awful lot of black, in the undercoat,
so does that make him a tri or a mahogany sable. I was looking at his
pedigree he has at least one known mural in his linage, so when we have
puppies I guess he could throw a few recessive traits. Does anyone know if
head structure is dominate or recessive? Also interested in which other
characteristics are dominate or recessive.

| People don't like them because they don't look like Lassie. People want
| Lassie color. That's how they ask for sables - Lassie color.
| What you are talking about is a "pure for sable" or "clear sable" - the
| has two sable genes (the brown color - yellow and red pigments), but no
| black genes. If you have a sable with one black gene, you have a sable
| black tipping all the way to a nearly black dog with tan undercoat and a
| head and legs (mahogany sable, sometimes mistakenly listed as a tricolor).
