So....Brick the 7mo old sheltie pup has been starting to sleep with his ducks. He's very driven to herd otherwise, but in a small area, stops fussing with them as soon as I close the door and come inside, and just goes to sleep. Very cute to look out to see a Sheltie pup on a blanket in a crate, surrounded by sleeping duckies.
For the first time, I just put him out in the yard with the flock, loose. There are 5 different pens that are all attached to each other, with all the gates open (hard to describe). I can hear Muttley the lead duck cursing at him, but no sounds of stampede. He's keeping them together, but also doing his own thing, with an eye on them. So far he's put them in 3 of the 5 pens as they attempt to wander off or bolt. Muttley is NOT happy with him. AT ALL.
Really neat to watch. So he's doing the farmcollie thing - herd when asked to or when it seems needed, keep an eye on them otherwise. No harm to the ducks, or to the puppy!
YAY!!! Pow didn't get to have his own ducks till his was a year old or more, and didn't get to stay with them till much later.
