I went to my grandparents' house for the 4th - cook out, watching the fireworks on the fairgrounds, etc. They have a few acres, partially wooded, which is heaven for my city girls. My brother and nephew found a box turtle - an active male that pedaled his feet and cranked his head when they picked him up, instead of just pulling himself into his shell. They brought it up to the house and let it crawl around, close to where I was sitting with Pepper at my feet. She sniffed it, followed it for a couple minutes, then flopped down in the grass next to my chair when it began to walk away.
Then, the little turtle decided to head toward us, full speed ahead. Pepper took exception to this - she stood between me and the turtle, then used her "big dog" bark when he kept coming. The turtle stopped, turned and headed toward the brush, much to her delight - she frisked back to me and took her place of honor.
