Just from perusing a few months, I see that you are a frequent contributor. I have just discovered that "Farm collies" still exist. When my parents moved me from Ark. to Calif (at the age of nine months) the story goes that he left other things behind, so that he could bring his three shepherds. I grew up with dogs like the ones I've been finding on the internet, at least from the photos and description of character. The first dog that was ever "mine" was a black and white dog that could be included in many of the photos of English Shepherds.
These were the best all-around dogs I've ever seen and I very much want to try to acquire one sometime next year. So, I will be researching and monitoring the Farmcollie page as, at 61, this will probably be my last dog....and I want him to be right. I have considered Border Collies and Australian Cattle Dogs, but they don't seem to have that laid back attitudes that my dad's dogs had. I remember his dogs, and my own, as being almost able to understand everything that was said and acting appropriately in any situation.
In the 70's I was very involved in showing and obedience (not collies), but grew tired of the politics and tendency to breed for cosmetic characteristics over working abilities and, well, brains. AKC breeds, in many instances, are not the dogs they used to be, in both appearance and temperment. Consequently, we now have Irish Setters that are stunningly beautiful, but wouldn't recognize a pheasant if it sat on his head. Airedales with enormous, fluffy legs and long beards........that can barely find their food dish, let alone find a bear in the woods (not that I'm a hunter).
Anyway, I want to find an all around dog, that will go on my many hikes, be a running companion, play frisbee or agility......and still be able to lay around the house and relax. And, hopefully, be less prone to finding his own job (like ripping the couch to shreds) when he's not kept constantly occupied (as I've know many Border Collies to do). BC's need a job, or they will find their own. ;-) Not that any breed/dog is perfect, but it helps to start in the right place.
Anyhoo, sorry to ramble on. I get kinda carried away when it comes to dogs. Do you ever breed/sell puppies? Do you have a website? Thanks for the welcome note.
