I posted about this to the Gracehaven FB page, so some of you have heard it. I thought others might find it interesting though, and of course, if there are any other dogs out there predicting death I would love to hear about it.
Last spring one of Kalee's does had to have a c-section. She looked fine the day we brought her home, but the next day started to go downhill. Kalee, a friend, and Jabari spent the day at the barn working on this doe, calling the vet, and working some more. That night about 9:30 Jabari went to the stall door and started barking furiously. Kalee and her friend rushed over almost expecting that the doe had died and Jabari had heard her hit the floor. But when Kalee opened the stall door that doe was standing, and just stumbled. The doe died about 30 minutes later. When Kalee told me about it I just assumed that Jabari had heard something that had set him off since he is all about maintaining the status quo.
A few months later one of my favorite hens started acting off. This hen was really kind of a pet. A couple of years earlier she had decided not to go with the other chickens in the chicken coop, but to sleep under the covered area near the front door. I had put a crate in there for her so she could be locked up safely from the predators at night. She and Jabari were very comfortable with each other since they shared the front yard. As the days went by and she acted more and more lethargic I realized she would probably die. Sure enough shortly after that I found her dead. Kalee told me that Jabari had barked at the hen that day. Very odd, but who knows what goes through the mind of a dog.
A couple of weeks ago another hen started acting off. Sure enough as the days went by she went downhill. I came home one day and Kalee told me "you had better check your hen - the grim reaper has spoken". I asked her if that meant Jabari was barking at the hen and she confirmed it did. When I went out that night to lock the chickens up that hen was missing. As I came out of the chicken yard Jabari ran to a bush in the yard. Sure enough the chicken was under it. She was very weak, but still alive. She was dead the next morning.
I have to admit it looks like Jabari has "the gift". It will be interesting to see if he continues like this, but I am in no hurry to check it out! If he starts barking like that at any of us we will getting ourselves to medical care pronto!
