BlueJay's temperament is changing all the time..
when we first got him he was very scared, very nervous and very unsure.
He'd been living in a pen in a back yard for 2 and 1/2 years in upstate
New York, in a village north of Syracuse, and was virtually unsocialized.
In Washington DC he would nearly twist my arms off when we were walking
in town. He was terrified of trucks, delivery men, power tools, buses,
people, streets, just about anything... when he first came to the Bahamas
it was nearly 2 weeks before he'd come out onto the balcony ... he was
convinced the sea at the bottom of the garden was a monster just waiting
for him.
He never played, he never allowed us to roll him over and scratch his
tummy. He was friendly but guarded always sure we were going to abandon
him....whenever we travelled we had problems .. he'd stay with a friend,
but we'd come back and he'd be very distant.
today he is a totally different dog. He seldom pulls, he's not good in
towns but here in the Bahamas he's great. He's very gentle, he allows us
to play with him, roll him around, he adores my fiance, and he's so
mellow. He sits either at my feet or my fiance's while we work. He
doesn't demand attention, but when he's playful, he's very very playful.
And while he still doesn't know what a ball is for, he's discovering that
a frisbee might have potential. he jumps up and puts his paws on my
shoulders for a dance!! (great that I'm only about 5'4') and he's very
affectionate. Sleeps on the bed until we go to sleep and then sleeps at
the foot of the bed...wants to be near us. Still nervous of the sea, but
then again can and does swim...
we still travel - but we have someone come in and live with him when we
do... and it makes a big difference.
We are still very much in early days with him. He's only been with us
since November 21. So we have a long way to go. But he's much better than
when he first arrived...
how big is he... he weighs 53lbs and stands 21 1/2" at the shoulder.
Jan
PS - he was tattooed when we got him. It's a big number and it's at the
top of his inner thigh.
