Hi All -
In this _Sheepdogs my faithful friends_ book it makes reference to
an Iris Combe book _Collies Yesterday and Today_ - I've heard of Iris
before but can't remember if I've heard of this book - sounds like it would
be right up our alley.
I really wish our scanner wasn't broken - there are some great
pictures in this book - not Collie pictures but collie dogs of all sorts.
Illinois Bob is here a bunch of times (of at least dogs that look very much
like him). One of those dogs is Old Hemp, considered the foundation sire
for the modern BC - Hemp looks an awful lot like Bob. There are also
pictures of the authors "collies" none of which look BCish at all (depsite
the wide range of BC looks) - two are very Sheltie looking.
There are also a number of early 1900 working dogs who look very
Plus that 1850 photo - the dog sort of looks like a BC-Airdale
cross - very, um, unique.
And there are a number of dogs labled "Welsh Collie" but I think
that just means any collie dog who came to the trials from Wales, not true
Welsh Collies. The little bit I did read seemed to pooh-pooh the idea of
*real* welsh collies as working dogs - sort of same thing we hear about
modern Collies (or ES or Shelties or Lhaso Apsos)...
It's a great book to look through. (Don't know when I'll have time
to read it). I'll scan some pics very soon -
