i love old stories of how farming "used to be". I know it still is
that way for many small farmers - up here in Vermontmost of the dairy farms
are in the 30-60 milking range and the beef farms even smaller - but in so
much of the country every thing is so mechanized.
Most of the farmers I know move their stock using teen aged boys on
three wheeled cycles (these boys are generally not as smart or as well
trained as your average stock dog but you don't have to feed them or
anything (their parents do that) and they'll often work just for the fun of
riding a three wheelers...) - i wish there were more working dogs around
here.
One of the farms nearby used to use a very pretty smooth coated
collie and a couple have BCs although I know at least one farmer is
frustrated by how his BC just doesn't relax. I met this guy at a yard sale
and he remarked that he wished his BC was calm like mine and i (once again)
explained that Quinn was an ES and that was why he was such a calm BC...
