By keeping the dog as quiet as possible (cage rest; that is, confinement to a
cage except to go out to go to the bathroom) until the body has gotten rid of
the dead worms. Activity increases the risk that a chunk of dead worm will
lodge somewhere with lethal consequences. This is one reason that heartworm
treatment is so dangerous.
