Carlson, Lenes Named Vermont Student-Athletes of the Week

BURLINGTON, Vt.
– Freshman Jan Carlson (Vernon, Vt.) of the women’s indoor track and field team and freshman Peter Lenes (Shelburne, Vt.) of the men’s hockey team, were named the Vermont Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of February 13th through February 19th.

Carlson grabbed America East Rookie of the Year honors at the America East Indoor Championship after compiling 21 of Vermont’s 53 points in the meet. The freshman won the 55 meters with a time of 7.283 to become the second Catamount in the program’s history to win the event at the America East Championship and the first since 1991 (Amy Dwire). Carlson, who competed in a total of four events on the afternoon, also finished fifth in the 200 meters (25.28), fourth in the pole vault (3.45m – 11-03.75), and seventh in the triple jump (11.17m – 36-07.75).

In Saturday’s 3-2 overtime victory over Massachusetts, Lenes scored the tying goal with 12 seconds left in regulation and then scored the game-winning goal at 1:08 of overtime. He was named the Hockey East Rookie of the Week for his effort. The goals were Lenes’ first since a 6-2 win over Providence on Nov. 11.
