This leaves many of us in a quandary about what to do with it. This course will cover the basics of AI, how to use AI as a Universal Design for Learning tool and an accessibility tool. We will cover how AI’s capabilities can help all students learn, especially those with learning challenges. We will also look at how
Would love it if you could spread the word for CSTA Vermont's annual spring event (via zoom) on May 21. Hope you will register also. It's a great time to network with other Vermont folks and there is something for everyone from elementary educators/librarians to high school ed tech folks.
Are any districts out there currently using ParentSquare and willing to share your experience? We're exploring it primarily for emergency notifications and classroom communication, and we'd love to hear how it's working for others.
We've used ParentSquare for community outreach including emergency communications for a few years now . Our communications director generally manages the platform but, as someone who sends communication out with it somewhat regularly, and as a recipient of messages via email, text, and phone calls, it seems to work very well. I find that it's easy to target the audience you intend to from large groups down to individuals. It's straightforward to verify that people have received messages. As far as I know, it's well liked by staff and the larger community.
We hope this message finds you well. As always, Vita-Learn remains committed to supporting K-12 education technology leaders across Vermont. We deeply value your membership and participation in our community, particularly your use of resources like our purchasing consortia to access discounted software and services.
As you know, Vita-Learn focuses on fostering collaboration and sharing best practices within our state. We are also proudly affiliated with CoSN (the Consortium for School Networking), our national counterpart organization, which shares a similar mission but operates on a broader scale.
If you could spare a moment to fill out this brief form on EDR solutions it would be much appreciated. This is mostly directed at districts who have EDR or are actively considering solutions. I can share results with those who are interested.
We have some elementary teachers that are getting a fertilized chicken egg in the classroom. They have reached out and are interested in setting up a live stream of the egg for families and staff to watch also. Given Youtube's policy changes, we are wondering if there are any other free live stream services that anyone is familiar with?
Hello - We are looking at our phone systems in a couple of our schools that will need a major overhaul including rewiring. Does anyone know of any funding sources out there that may help with this?
Has anyone done wi-fi voip phones? Are they even allowed when it comes to e911?
Greetings, We adjusted our YouTube settings last month with the new compliance rules, but students are still able to watch videos by pasting links to youtube videos into google slide, docs, etc. Or emailing themselves links from home. The are able to "preview" the videos in gmail or google docs.
Has anyone had success in disabling the preview option in Google Admin? I see there are some 3rd party extensions available. Any advice appreciated.
It is my understanding of those rules that students can no longer do "Search or Browse" youtube. They can still watch, but that has to be done by embedding it into something like google classroom, or doc, or external service.

That is how we are interpreting this as well, so kids can use Google search results to find a YouTube URL and copy it into the alternative yout-ube.com site for viewing. It's a hassle for them to preview content this way, but it works.
An additional obstruction is that students can no longer search YouTube directly from gSlides to insert relevant video clips, which we ask them to do regularly. Although a bit cumbersome, here is our recommended workflow for that. <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QDDOa6DHNvCKZb0N6AcZF7FH5jJZzDQj0JZKSB3KcXQ/edit?tab=t.0>
Students ARE blocked from browsing and embedding videos, but they are being sneaky and either getting the url of the videos from google searches or just emailing them from personal accounts at home. When they get the url, they can just preview it in their school gmail window, or paste the link into a google slide and preview it there. Smart kids, but getting complaints now from teachers. Wish there was a way to disable the link preview option. The only solution I have found so far is a paid solution that covers GSuite apps, but not email. https://xfanatical.com/blog/disable-link-preview-feature-in-docs-slides-and-drawings/
We have noticed that Securly Classroom is causing an issue with students where they do a Google search, and then Securly Classroom will block the search page because one of the search results is blocked by the filter.
I've reached out to Securly, and they've informed me that this has to do with a change Google has made in how it presents the Summary bit at the top of the page. If the Google Auto Generate Summary that is shown from the top gets that info from a blocked site, it will block the search entirely.
I just received that, as well. It would just state that their search was " reddit.com" in our case, no matter how innocuous.
They are working on a fix, but this works in the meanwhile!

We've noticed the same thing when students use Google to search. Any results that include content from Reddit trigger a block on the whole search results page. We've been able to get around it by having students search using DuckDuckGo.

The Securly fix worked for us and the discussion I had with support has us waiting on their engineering folks for an update.

I just saw this same issue on Reddit using Go Guardian. The link that Ryan listed above has the same settings that fixed the issue, Network Prediction and pre fetch often load pages first that may be blocked and then the entire search gets blocked.

I know everyone is very busy with VTCAP right now! I am hoping however that you can quickly respond to a brief form regarding 1:1 access for students at your elementary schools .
We continue to advocate for 1:1 in our elementary schools in Burlington ( in the upper elem grades, in particular) and need some support from other districts in the area to know what this looks like in neighboring districts and beyond.
Hi All: This group is amazing ! After testing today, I checked the form and had 20 responses. Thank you so much. If anyone else is interested in this information, please let me know. Quick summary is that 81% of respondents are 1:1 at the elementary level and the remaining 19% have a hybrid which equates mostly to shared devices in K and 1 or k-2 and the remaining have 1:1. This will be super helpful to us. Thank you again! Amy

Adding to the chaos of the VTCAP mess is the fact that Google Slides aren't functioning properly for anyone here on a ChromeBook. Typing text of more than a few letters results in this:
Works fine for anyone on a Windows or Mac machine. We first thought it originated with interference from a Chrome extension, but process of elimination ruled that out. There's a work around, in which the Slides are *downloaded* as a .pptx file, opened from there, and then things work correctly. Anyone else have this? Seriously annoying.
DB, is that happening when you use the kiosk extension? My first thought is the zoom is off.

Yes, but staff accounts are not monitored via Bark - and it still happens if the staff member is on a ChromeBook.
Verified the device itself is not monitored by Bark.
Bjorn - I agree that it seems like the zoom is off somehow, but after no luck after testing/trying almost every conceivable setting. I turn to the collective hive mind for help.
I did some poking around and the issue seemed to stop when disabling the force-installed extension abfmmnnkkojjfgajfjjodllhmkcpfkam which seems to be Bark related.

In chrome settings - choosing reset to defaults fixed the issue.

I should have created a post about this earlier. This happened to us all day today. We poke around our firewall to review the URLs that needed to be exempt and we were still unsuccessful. I had a teacher test student credentials periodically, and they just reported back that it was successful. It was a stressful day of troubleshooting but we are hopeful to resume testing tomorrow.
When we had an issue with our test, we checked this below URLS (were entered) and found the videos were blocked in our firewall labeled as “http-video” app.

A monthly gathering for K12 IT Leaders hosted by Vita-Learn. Each month’s call is an opportunity for K12 IT Leaders to gather to share, collaborate, and problem solve together. Topic(s) will vary based on you and your questions and interests.
Monthly calls are hosted on the first Wednesday of the month at lunchtime. Please feel free to bring your lunch, and join your peers for a virtual lunch & learn/discussion!
Hey Jeff. I missed the first one unfortunately. Do we need to register once for the series or separately for each month? Also, to be honest I don't know if I already registered - can you tell? Will it cause a problem if I register again? Sorry to be so high maintenance :)
Please register for each instance. Mostly, I am trying to get relatively good data on attendance and intent to attend. We've added a relatively low-cost sponsorship to the calls that will allow a vendor to sponsor the call -- which gets them a brief couple minutes to say hello to you on the call, and we'll call them out "Thank you to Acme corporation for sponsoring today 's call!".
Lamoille North Supervisory Union is currently seeking candidates for a Network & Systems Administrator Level II position. If you, or someone you know is interested, please submit an application via SchoolSpring: https://www.schoolspring.com/jobdetail?jobId=5069329
Thanks!
