First the numbers.

At Essex Town we have 412 computers - ranging in age from 8 years to 1 year
old. We have 1FTE tech (new this year) +.25FTE tech + myself during the
critical start-up weeks and when the computer repair log starts looking
like the phone book. This computes to 320+/- to 1.

The remaining .75 full time tech works on servers, networks, account
management, e-mail, and of course printing.

Some comments.

Age of computers is a big thing. I can tell by the spare parts inventory
that each year we are doing more to keep the old stuff running. And as an
aside the old stuff cause a lot of grief because "they are so slow".

The NCLB planner on the NEIR*TEC web site says a ration of 350:1 with 4
hour response time. That sure sounds good but I can not see it
happening. Of course what does response time really mean?

One thing that is also clear from these responses - there are a lot of
different support configurations. Definitions have to be very clear in any
survey.

Ken
