Hi all -

If at all possible, could you circulate this information on FREE GIS
software as part of a Geography mapping project to the appropriate content
teachers in your school?

Thanks,

Subject: Free GIS software and Geography Alliance opportunity

Hello Educators and Geography Alliance people,

The message below was sent to each state's GIS office from ESRI, and it
describes an opportunity to receive free software and books (as well as
cash to the state Geography Alliance). Please take a look and let me
know if VCGI can help in any way!

Leslie

***********************************

ESRI is conducting a powerful GIS education project called the "US
Community
Atlas," in which local schools participate over the web. Classes build a

profile of "their community" using HTML and GIF/JPG maps, then submit
these
to the ESRI web. The maps can be created with online mapping engines or
local GIS software, and we provide a link to request a free starter CD
of
tools and data. ESRI has committed to provide free ArcView software to
schools that submit a complete project. ESRI has also offered $2400 to
each
state Geography Alliance to be used for training, analyzing the
submissions,
and rewarding four schools for high quality projects. In addition, ESRI
will
award a library of books to ten schools in each state where the
Geography
Alliance participates.

We are hoping you will contact your state Geography Alliance and
encourage
them to participate, and perhaps even help them out with ideas, data, or

training. Most Alliances are jumping into a new world with this project,
and
most don't know who to contact for local guidance. If you can offer them

some encouragement, we would be most grateful.

You can read all about the Community Atlas project at
http://www.esri.com/communityatlas. The opening page also has a link to
help
you find your state Geography Alliance.

Thanks for your help with this! If you have any questions, please
contact
me.
