Alan, at Waits River Valley School we use Winproxy, which has configurable
filtering, and optional virus detection.  We have a dial-up line in the Library
and run 9 computers on a LAN, running Netscape etc.  It was pretty easy to set up.
We have a similar setup in the Tech lab.  Performance is pretty decent, with caching
in Winproxy so often-used pages are faster etc.

I'm sure other schools have different solutions.

If you are considering fairly locked-down email, look at Gagglenet.  You can set up
student accounts, read any mail as administrator, automagically scan for
unacceptable wording, etc. And restrict sending email to just your own group..
Not MY email, but you are in a restricted environment.

I once built a Radio Station inside a corrections unit in New York; the 'students'
were highly interested and cooperative.
