Hi Jessica
The following published gas evolution techniques have been used to
analyze for DIC in landfill leachates and groundwater
Games, L. M. and Hayes, J. M., 1976. Isolation and quantitative analysis
of the major carbon fractions in natural water samples. Anal. Chem. 48,
130-135.
Atekwana EA, Krishnamurthy RV. 1998. Investigations of seasonal
variations in dissolved inorganic carbon and d13C of surface waters
using a modified gas evolution technique. Journal of Hydrology 205:
265-278.

Some additional references on DIC in landfills include:
Games LM, and Hayes JM. 1977. Carbon isotopic study of the fate of
landfill leachate in groundwater. J. Water Pollution Control Federation
49: 668-677.

Walsh DC, LaFleur RG, Bopp RF. 1993. Stable carbon isotopes in dissolved
inorganic carbon of landfill leachate. Ground Water Management 16:
153-167.

Hackley KC, Liu CL, Coleman DD. 1996. Environmental isotope
characteristics of landfill leachates and gases. Ground Water 34:
827-836.

Rank D, Papessch W, Rajner V. 1996. Environmental isotopes study at a
research landfill (Breitenau, Lower Austria). International Atomic
Energy Vienna, IAEA-SM-336/111P: 379-381.

Cheers

Thanks Ethan - I look forward to receiving the papers.

Just a quick question: did you analyse for d13C-DIC? If so, what method
did you use? I've been trying precipitation with barium chloride with
little success.

Regards,
Jessica

Jessica:

I'll send a couple of related papers.

microbial activity in aquifers, in Manual of Environmental
Microbiology, 2nd ed., C.J. Hurst et al., (eds.), American Society
for Microbiology Press, Washington, DC, p. 728-742.
