Dear Colleagues,

We have been asked to analyze C and H in light
(gaseous) hydrocarbons; probably mostly methane.

While I think I can handle the analytical part, I
must admit difficulties in figuring out how to
collect the samples in the first place. Normally
samples are sent to us for analysis, but this
time we have been asked for advice on collection
as well, and I have no prior experience in that
regard.

Can anybody direct me to suitable published
sources (or is anybody willing to share his/her
experience) on sampling light (gaseous)
hydrocarbons as pore gases within sediment or
dissolved in water? An added difficulty is that
some of the samples might have to be taken under
waters up to 60 m deep, where I forecast samples
of hydrocarbons dissolved in the water column;
those in soft bottom sediment and the ones in
drill cores.

I admit this to be a wide ranging question, but
any and all suggestions are most appreciated.

Cheers & Thanks,

Clemente
