We have been using both inserts with and without bottom springs from Alltech (now Grace), they both work well. The difference between them is how much sample they would keep while leaving no headspace.

We successfully used inserts in standard 2ml GC vials in an Finnigan
H-Device with AS200 autosampler. We ordered them from Grace (Alltech).
Refer to page 361 of their SPE/General chromatography catalog (link
below). We used the glass 100microL without spring. I haven't tried the
models with spring, so I am not sure if they work better.
