Dear all:
Please bring the following opnenings to the attention of potentially
interested students.
Thanks,
Steve Foley
The new "Geocycles" Cluster in Earth system science at the University
of Mainz, Germany has immediate openings for:
Two Ph.D. studentships :
(1) Silicon isotopes in Archaean continental crustal rocks
(2) Stable Cd, Cu, and Zn isotopes in soil
Project 1 will be run as an international cooperation between Mainz
(Prof. Stephen Foley) and Tervuren, Belgium (Prof. Luc André; Africa
Museum). The isotope and trace element laboratory at the Africa Museum
is specialized in the analysis of the stable isotopes of silicon and
magnesium, enabling investigation of the possible correlation between
Si-isotope fractionation and age within the Archaean. We are looking
for a highly motivated geochemistry student with an interest in
learning clean laboratory chemical separation and performing intricate
analyses with multicollector ICP-mass spectrometry. A background in
geochemistry or analytical chemistry is required and good laboratory
skills are expected.
Project 2 will be run as a cooperation between the University of Mainz
(Prof. Wolfgang Wilcke) and the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry at
Mainz (Dr. Wafa Abouchami and Dr. Stephen Galer) and will study
possible differences of isotope ratios of Cd, Cu and Zn among soils
developed from different parent materials and processes responsible for
these differences. We are looking for a highly motivated soil
chemistry, environmental chemistry or geochemistry student with an
interest in learning clean laboratory chemical separation and
performing intricate analyses with multicollector ICP- and thermal
ionization mass spectrometry. A background in trace metal chemistry in
the environment is required and good laboratory skills are expected.
Closing date for applications is 20th December 2005, but applications
should be made as soon as possible. Duration of the Ph. D. projects is
three years starting no later than 1st March 2006. Applications or
requests for further information should be sent to Stephen Foley
([log in to unmask]) or Wolfgang Wilcke ([log in to unmask]).
Applications should include contact information for two academic
referees.
