SCHOOL OF GEOGRAPHY AND GEOSCIENCES

RESEARCH FELLOW

Salary: £22,289 per annum

This three-year position, starting on 1 April 2006, or as soon as possible
thereafter, is available to work on the development of chemical proxies for
obtaining palaeoenvironmental information from thick, ancient deposits of
cave guano in Southeast Asia. Based at the University of St. Andrews, you
will play central role within a NERC-funded collaborative research
programme also involving investigators at the University of Bristol and
Queen's University of Belfast.

Under direction from the investigators, you will develop and validate
stable-isotope, palynological and organic/inorganic geochemical tools for
obtaining records of terrestrial environmental change from deposits of cave
guano. These deposits occur extensively throughout the tropics, but have
been overlooked as a source of palaeoenvironmental information. You will
apply the methodologies developed during the course of the project to the
development of new palaeoenvironmental records from Malaysia, Indonesia and
the Philippines from the last glacial maximum to recent times and use these
records to determine patterns of vegetation/climate change in the region.
These records will be used assess, and assist in refining, the performance
of the model-driven reconstructions of vegetation/climate change in the
region and assess the likely impact of these changes on human and faunal
migration through the region.

Previous direct laboratory research experience in stable-isotope analysis
by isotope ratio monitoring mass spectrometry is essential and relevant
fieldwork experience is highly desirable. Previous experience in organic
geochemistry and/or the development of Quaternary records of environmental
change in tropical regions is desirable.
