Darren,
Yes, some of the pictures are bitmapped... (you have seen the real book as
it is). But in bringing together a number of documents into chapters and the
problem of different software used for creating the documents, I found
terrible problems in converting figures to the (professional) editing
program I used (Framemamker was the pragram of choise to do this). If
everything had be done with Word, editing had been a disaster completely,
but the pictures probably had been a bit better on average. Problem was to
convert figures to my editing program (not Microsoft!!!) from the files I
received.... This does not mean the non-Microsoft prgram is bad, but
communicating between different programs for graphics still is a disaster -
I had to resize the figures in almost all cases and this was a very critical
operation giving most problems.
Text, however, is not giving simular problems, but also there I had to spill
a lot of time to adjust things, since Word uses a non-uniform way of
defining special characters (well, depends if you consider Microsoft as the
only platform existing, as in too many cases if working with PC - in that
case the reasoning can also be different). Or what to think about different
programs for formulas that do not convert at all to other programs (special
those used in Word were a complete disaster for me). Those had to be
converted by hand...!!! I hope you understand the problems a bit in editing
a book like this.
In the second volume a lot of the figures (made by myself, redrawn after
figures as presented in literature - I am talking about hundreds of them...)
are bitmapped because a higher quality (like factor program) would have
taken a multitude more in time to get a reasonable result. I have choosen
for preparing this work in a time-frame that is more acceptable instead of
working forever at a book that might be perfect in cosmetical sense, but
does not increase the scientific contents at all.
Still I think everything scientific explained in my book volume-I is quite
clear the way it is, and that was the main concern for me. Your question
just relates to a cosmetic fact to my opinion. Of course, if you think the
book is not worth the price, you are free not to buy it...
Best wishes,
Pier.
