This three-year NERC funded position, starting on 1 October 2005, or as soon as possible
thereafter, is available to work on the chemical characterization of artificial and natural charcoals.
You will be based in St Andrews and will play central role within a NERC-funded collaborative
research programme also involving investigators at the Universities of Oxford, Nottingham and
Edinburgh. You will, under direction from the investigators, prepare a suite of artificial charcoals
and select a suite of natural charcoals for analysis using a range of techniques including nuclear
magnetic resonance, elemental and stable-isotope analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,
electron microscopy, hydropyrolysis, raman spectroscopy, gas chromatography and radiocarbon
dating. The outcome of the research programme will be a deeper understanding of the stability
and behaviour of charcoal under a range of environmental conditions, of relevance to archaeology,
radiocarbon dating and carbon cycle research. Previous direct laboratory research experience with
one of the above techniques is essential and experience with more than one technique is highly
desirable. Previous experience working with charcoal/black carbon in the context of archaeology,
radiocarbon dating or carbon cycle research is also highly desirable. Salary - £19,460 - £21,640
