The stable isotope laboratory (ISOLAB - 
http://depts.washington.edu/isolab/index.html) in the department of 
Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington, Seattle 
seeks a full time Research Engineer/Scientist to manage and maintain 
the research laboratory's operations.

ISOLAB is a shared facility of four faculty members in Biology, 
Atmospheric Sciences, and Earth and Space Sciences.  The successful 
candidate will have thorough knowledge of the field of stable isotope 
chemistry, and will be expected to continue developing knowledge and 
experience with applications of isotope analysis in areas of 
participating faculty programs in atmospheric chemistry, geobiology, 
and climate and cryosphere research.  The laboratory houses five 
stable isotope ratio mass spectrometers (IRMS) (four Finnigan, one 
Micromass), one tunable diode laser absorption spectrometer (TDLAS), 
and an ion chromatograph (Dionex).

Duties and responsibilities will include the application of 
established measurement techniques, the development of new 
techniques, and supervision of graduate students and undergraduate 
assistants.  Responsibilities include providing direction and 
monitoring the laboratory research projects of graduate students, 
postdocs, and undergraduate employees, and redirecting research 
efforts to achieve project objectives as needed.  The successful 
candidate will be expected to interact with researchers outside the 
laboratory and the University, and maintain collegial working 
relationships with collaborators at other institutions.  Assigned 
tasks will be of a general nature, following objectives of funded 
research programs.  The candidate will be expected to use independent 
judgment and take substantial responsibility for designing and 
implementing procedures for reaching those objectives.

The candidate will be expected to contribute to reports and 
publications, to write proposals to fund the routine laboratory 
operations, upgrade equipment, etc., and attend professional meetings 
to present progress on novel laboratory techniques developed within 
the laboratory.  Duties may also include coordination of field 
projects.  There may be opportunities for spending time in remote 
field locations.

Minimum qualifications include three or more years experience in the 
field of isotope geochemistry, familiarity with both dual-inlet and 
continuous flow techniques, and M.S. in chemistry, biology, or earth 
sciences or equivalent combination of education and experience.
