Dear colleagues,
Beate Orberger, Axel Hofmann and myself would like to draw your
attention to a special session (Theme 3: Early earth from Mantle to
microbes; session 03F) at the 18^th Annual Goldschmidt Conference to be
held on *13 - 18 July 2008* in Vancouver, Canada entitled:
*'Hydrothermal impact on the early Precambrian seawater composition as
recorded by banded iron formations, black shales, and other proxies'*
Convenors: Andrey Bekker, Axel Hofmann, and Beate Orberger
Keynote Speaker: Boswell Wing, McGill University
Hydrothermal processes have strong impacts on seawater composition,
nutrient contents, productivity, ocean circulation and redox state.
Multiple lines of evidence suggest that these processes were more
important when mantle heat flux was higher in the early Precambrian.
Water-rock interaction likely released large amounts of trace metals
that strongly influenced the biogeochemistry and productivity in the
early oceans. Giant metal deposits formed, and diverse microbial
communities affected the carbon, sulphur and nitrogen ocean cycles.
Banded iron formations, jaspers, cherts, black shales and other marine
sedimentary rocks are ideal proxies to characterize, evaluate, and model
the importance of hydrothermal activity. This session seeks
contributions from geochemical and biogeochemical studies of the Archean
and Paleoproterozoic rock record, theoretical modeling and experimental
studies.
We would like to inform you and invite for contribution. Please send
this mail to your colleagues who might be interested in this session.
