PhD opportunities in Palaeolimnology and Palaeoclimatology, University of
Glasgow. There are several projects available that focus on reconstructing
past environmental change from lake sites on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and
in Hokkaido, Northern Japan. Successful candidates will have access to
world-class preparative and analytical facilities in the Department of
Geographical and Earth Sciences at the University of Glasgow and at the
Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC). A strength of
the projects will be their multi-proxy approach, utilising biomarker,
microfossil and isotopic approaches (including compound specific AMS 14C).
Students who have an interest in palaeoclimatology and geochemistry are
encouraged to compete for PhD studentships. Several funding sources are
available: home and overseas students can apply for University of Glasgow
scholarships
(http://www.gla.ac.uk/faculties/physicalsciences/scholarships/). Graduates
from Scottish Universities can also apply to the Carnegie Trust
(http://www.carnegie-trust.org/our_schemes.htm). Applicants should have a
1st class bachelors or masters degree in geology, geography, chemistry or a
related discipline and should send requests for further information
(accompanied by a CV) to BOTH Dr James Bendle ([log in to unmask])
and Dr Andrew Henderson ([log in to unmask]).
The Department of Geographical & Earth Sciences at the University of Glasgow
is an active interdisciplinary research environment with strong interests in
palaeoclimatology, geomorphology, biomineralisation, geomicrobiology,
palaeontology and thermochronology. For further information on the
department see the departmental website http://www.ges.gla.ac.uk/. The
application deadline for the University of Glasgow scholarships is the 31st
January 2009.
