I've thought that this is not a problem. It's just supposed to be so.
No matter how far the bellow is shrunk, it will be stretched out until
the display goes zero when you pressed "reset". For example, let's say
the bellow was set at 1000. If you re-start the software with this
bellow position, the display will show the bellow at 0 although it
hasn't changed. However, by re-setting the bellow the software will
recognize the full expansion which is the reference position as zero.
The number of bellow setting is just a matter of precision of bellow
adjustment, I guess. It seems to me a bit of burden on the motor
though...
Let me know if you think this is wrong.

I know that queasy feeling when the bellows stepper motor just keeps on
pushing after the bellows is fully squeezed! I'm not aware of the
stepper
motors pulling too far in the expand direction. To fix the 'squeeze too
hard' problem, try double clicking the reference bellows and click
setup.
At the bottom of the list there is a parameter called 'maximum travel'.
4000 is a good setting for our machine. I think 4600 is the default,
which
is terribly high. We also have the 'electrical stop' button selected.
The
sample bellows default of 3500 seems to be ok and hasn't needed
adjustment.
This setting does affect the bellows cycling at the beginning of each
analysis when looking for min/max ref beam.
