and thanks to all who responded to our original query.

The symptoms on our machine resemble those on Janet Hope's, but in our case
most freeze-ups occur while running the Kiel device (our main activity).

We are trying out everyone's suggestions systematically.  So far, updating
to 1.41 makes no difference.  We do have regular virus check updates and
until now have run F-Secure in the background.  We have just tried
disabling the virus-checker while running the instrument.
