Three schools in our SU have been using iMail (by Ipswitch) for years. I
have appreciated "local control" as well as the ability to manage our own
lists. There is also some calendar functionality that we have not really
taken advantage of. We have an older version and I know that recent versions
are more of a "communication suite". Of course, the drawback is that we need
to manage our own servers.

One-time cost ($650 for 250 users, just mail service) with reasonable annual
maintenance fees.
