As others have stated "HandBrake" is a good option http://www.pcworld.com/article/242876/how_to_rip_a_dvd_with_handbrake.html And, as far as copyright it is ok to rip for educational purposes according to the DMCA’s anti-circumvention provision ...http://blogs.itap.purdue.edu/learning/2012/05/29/to-rip-or-not-to-rip/
Currently, the exemptions make circumvention of DVD encryption legal in a few cases:
Motion pictures on DVDs that are lawfully made and acquired and that are protected by the Content Scrambling System when circumvention is accomplished solely in order to accomplish the incorporation of short portions of motion pictures into new works for the purpose of criticism or comment, and where the person engaging in circumvention believes and has reasonable grounds for believing that circumvention is necessary to fulfill the purpose of the use in the following instances:
(i) Educational uses by college and university professors and by college and university film and media studies students; (I would expect that HS would be valid as well)
(ii) Documentary filmmaking;
(iii) Noncommercial videos

Subject: ripping a video clip - software?
Hi, All,
I apologize if this has been addressed. No time to search forums and old e-mail is gone with our transition to gmail. Sorry!
I have a high school teacher who teaches a film and media course. He would like to rip a section of a "real" movie (one produced and shown at movie theaters and available on DVD - not a locally created movie such as those made with a Flip) to use in his classroom with students. Obviously, there are copyright rules, and these movies are encoded, but we get that part. He just wants a short clip to put on an EDU 2.0 forum or to show in class for discussion purposes.
Thoughts? Paid software is fine if it will do the job.
If you are a video expert and can chat with this guy to brainstorm ideas for a few minutes over the next couple of days, that would be great. please reply off list.
Thanks.
Joanne
