I agree with Ben. I have 2 Toshiba 1600EP 6kVA UPS systems that have run for 10 years without fail. I have changed the batteries once - not because the batteries were failing but as a preventive maintenance. If you talk to a battery company or Toshiba they will want to be paid top $ to come on-site to change the batteries and 'service' the systems. But that all costs > 3 times the battery price. As with Ben, I agree that the battery replacement is straightforward and easily done and only takes ~30min. I timed the battery change to when I was cleaning the source so the IRMS was vented.
Good Luck

Hi Aaron, we have two Toshiba 1600EP 6kVA units and two 10kVA GES-TN11 series from Always on.
All of our systems run a delta IRMS and 2-3 peripherals for at least 20 minutes. With just an EA, you may be able to get an hour of run time. Most manufacturers recommend batteries after 5 years. We have went up to 8 years on original batteries. It is not that bad to replace batteries; we have gotten them for about $500 shipped and I install them. Do not be conned into buying batteries from a UPS manufacturer; they don’t make them... just find quality equivalents that don't cost a fortune to ship.
I prefer the Toshiba UPS because it is smaller, quieter and has hot swappable batteries. You don't even need to shut down the load. Our always on, on the other hand, is a lot more involved to get to the batteries and it must be fully shut down. We have a remote eye on the Toshiba that sends emails and calls when any parameter is out of spec.
For repairs, we have replaced batteries on all units, which cost me about $500 per unit. I also had a fuse go out on a Toshiba for ~$10. For the always on, I had one main 10kV board fail. We were being directed to a new unit when contacting always on. Luckily it was just two capacitors and a diode we replaced in house, so about $100 in repair beyond batteries.
A striking difference I have ran into has been with Tech support. Toshiba has always been reachable and willing to work with me through schematics and any troubleshooting. When I have reached tech support at Always on, they have taken a more proprietary approach to my calls and typically insist I send the whole unit in for them to repair or buy a new one.
But with either unit, I have gotten countless hours of protection, which is worth a lot.
Cheers,
Ben

Subject: [ISOGEOCHEM] UPS for an IRMS lab
Hello All,
We are looking into getting a UPS system for our IRMS lab now that we have had frequent power outages. I was hoping we could get some recommendations from labs that have UPS systems installed? Our lab has a Delta V (ideally expanding to 2), 2 GCs, an isolink, an EA, and a Gasbench. We are hoping to have backup for ~2hrs.
We’d be very interested to hear about:
1) Recommended manufacturers/vendors
2) Recommend size
3) Long-term costs for maintenance
4) Any other recommendations or things you wish you could have done differently
Thanks in advance!
Aaron
