Dear Biswaijt,
The high vapour pressure of MeOH will make it nigh impossible to analyse MeOH this way without the measured d13C being an artefact as a result of evaporative loss of some material and associated isotopic fractionation.
Even placing powdered silica inside the tin cups to soak up MeOH may not work as this may even hasten evaporative loss.
The safest way to analyse liquids on an EA-IRMS is by capping the EA with an injector cap (available from your instrument supplier) and to inject samples either manually through the septum or using a liquid autosampler.
Given the huge dead volume above the chromium oxide filling, injected liquids will produce a wide CO2 peak, wider than what one is used to from solid samples.
Best,
Wolfram

Subject: [ISOGEOCHEM] Carbon Isotope measurement of Methanol
Dear ISOGEOCHEM members
I need a help from all the expertise in the field of stable Isotope. I want to measure the d13C value of methanol. Is there any way so that I could measure the value in Flash 2000 Elemental Analyzer (EA-IRMS) packed in tin capsule. Although I know GC-C-IRMS with a polar column can be used to measure its value but at this moment we have connected EA with the IRMS and I need the value in urgent basis.
Any suggestion from anyone will be greatly appreciated .
Thanks in advance
Regards
Biswajit
