Aquatic, especially marine, sediments are global sinks of organic carbon, and active hot-spots of integrated carbon-sulfur-and-iron cycling. In situ, microbe-mediated sulfate reduction, rendered via orgnaoclastic sulfate respiration (OSR) or anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM), is coupled with the oxidation of organic matter and dissolution/precipitation of iron compounds (Fe-oxyhydroxides, Fe-sulfide, etc.). On the other hand, oxidation of reduced sulfur species, particularly sulfide, is harnessed with carbon dioxide fixation (into organic matter) or complex organic carbon degradation by chemolithoautotrophic or chemoorganoheterotrophic microorganisms, respectively. Concentrations and isotopic ratios of the various constituents of sediment pore-fluids/chemical-precipitates help decipher in situ biogeochmical pathways. Although significant information on the carbon-sulfur-iron cycles of modern marine and lacustrine sediments have been generated in this way, several questions regarding sulfur compounds oxidation/dispropotionation, relative importance of OSR and AOM in sulfate reduction, processes at sulfate-methane transition zones, etc. cannot be answered from preserved geochemical records alone. In this session we would attempt to improve the overall understanding of carbon-sulfur-iron cycles in aquatic sediments by integrating preserved geochemical records with the results obtained from in situ as well as in vitro geomicrobiological experiments. Emphasis would be on correlating microbial community structures/functions (revealed by meta-omics approaches) with geochemical parameters to establish realistic models of sedimentary biogeochemical processes.
