Position Description:
Reporting to the principal investigator, manages the operation of a
continuous-flow isotope ratio mass spectrometer for the determination of
stable isotope ratios of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur in environmental
samples. Selects appropriate methodology; prepares and establishes
priority
of samples for analysis on the spectrometer. Prepares data reports, drafts
grant proposals and selected results, and drafts manuscripts for
publication. Trains laboratory staff in the operation of equipment.
Maintains the isotope ratio mass spectrometer; orders supplies and
equipment.
Requires a bachelor's degree in a science discipline and
approximately two years of hands-on laboratory experience, preferably
preparing environmental samples for stable isotope ratio analysis. Also
requires understanding of the principles fof stable isotope mass
spectrometry; excellent analytic and communication skills, as well as the
ability to troubleshoot mechanical and performance problems. Must possess
experience in preparing scientific data for publication. Knowledge of
calculus, statistics and analytical chemistry is preferred.
