Laboratory Manager, Research Associate, or Research Technician (LM/RA/RT)
Stable Isotope Laboratory, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University
of Calgary


Applications are invited for a Laboratory Manager, Research Associate, or
Research Technician (LM/RA/RT) at the Technician/Technologist III level for
the Stable Isotope Laboratory in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at
the University of Calgary. You will join a team of physicists and
geochemists engaged in various aspects of fundamental and applied isotope
research. The Stable Isotope Laboratory also provides services for
researchers from several departments on campus, and for numerous clients
from other universities, the governmental, and the private sector. The
Laboratory houses six stable isotope mass spectrometers and several
extraction lines.

Responsibilities of the LM/RA/RT include but are not limited to (1)
equipment maintenance, e.g. troubleshooting and repair of mass
spectrometers and peripheral devices, (2) laboratory management including
training, assistance, and supervision of laboratory staff and external
users, (3) handling of customer inquiries and implementing a
fee-for-service schedule for all performed analyses. Subject to the work
load from the above responsibilities, the LM/RA/RT will (4) dedicate up to
50% of his/her time to research projects on own initiative.

The successful candidate should have a degree (BSc, MSc, or PhD) in
Physics, Geology/Geochemistry, or Engineering, plus experience in stable
isotope research and the associated instrumentation. Experience with vacuum
systems is essential, knowledge of data base management is preferable. The
candidate must also be fluent in verbal and written English and have good
interpersonal skills. This Limited Term appointment is for two years, with
renewal dependent on performance and continued funding. Starting date can
be as early as March 1, 1998. The salary classification commensurate with
experience and education.
